What does “your favourite things” really mean to you?

Perplexed was my friend when she walked into our apartment for the first time and was surprised at our “lack of things” in our place.

I don’t have “things” … the only things we have would be our books, our art collection and our music. These things are our resources, my resources, they have followed me over three continents to this island. They are me, I am part of them.

As a modern nomad, those things come along every time we decide to move along. While we reduced consciously from a big villa with five bedrooms to a tiny weeny apartment on an island in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

We wanted a massive conscious change, we wanted to “let go”, decluttering our lives and happily moving towards freedom. Now we have a lock-up and go scenario which suits us perfectly.

Most noteworthy, this is where things became interesting, now I actually have time to do my favourite things. We have changed from “to have” to “we do” over a period of three years. Yes, it took three years of letting go, it was riveting and well worth it. We need less, it frees up time.

Kusmi Tea, originally started in Russhttps://marutsca.com/what-does-your-favourite-things-really-mean-to-you/ia and then they moved to France.

I love having my tea on our balcony, sipping away and having the time to be fully present and enjoying my Kusmi Tea. My flavour of the month is black tea infused with bergamot. You would know it as normal Earl Grey English tea, but not the Kusmi Teas, this is the real stuff. It’s simply divine, I make a pot of tea for us … me and my tea … us two. That’s relaxing.

By being present in my life, having scaled-down and having time to “kind to ourselves” I finally have time to go for a massage. My treat presently is the bamboo massage from our Spa close by.

I love drawing, designing and interior drawings. I’m always drawing, playing with ideas in my head. My little black book is always at hand, one never knows when the muse is going to kiss us.

Consequently, I love watching foreign movies with subtitles. Movies on art, interesting cultures and biographies are also among my favourites. Recently I watched Babette’s Feast, shot in Denmark. What grabbed me is the beauty and love that we can share through food, in this case, Babette cooked for the village people. This kind act reached deep into the souls of the common village people.

Freshly baked bread, it smells so good.

I like baking bread, you don’t really find “Graubrot” on the island and we have to improvise and bake our own bread. What about you? You also love the smell of fresh baked bread, cutting through the still warm crust and eating that warm slice with button dripping from it.

Our view from The Stahttps://marutsca.com/what-does-your-favourite-things-really-mean-to-you/tion Holistic Centre & Hotel

One of my favourite things to do here in Seychelles is visiting The Station up on Sans Souci Road. This is the highest road on the island and means” the street without worries”. Hence The Station is a holistic haven for me. With a Spa, a homeopathic shop and a great restaurant, we can indulge in homebaked bread with hummus and freshly squeezed orange juice. It is just great sitting there and losing yourself watching out over the beautiful Indian Ocean.

  1. Hi,

I liked reading about your change of attitude, your approach. It’s amazing of how we just always WANT THINGS and continue in the hamster wheel. Instead we should be more selective, more time for ourselves. Great inspiration. Thank you.

    1. Thank you Tom,
Yes, it was mind-blowing to get rid, give away, sell all the stuff! And now one realises that all of the “wants” was ridiculous actually. It did not improve our lives, so I dropped it.

      Take care,
      The M-Team,

  2. Hi, Marutsca!
I like the way you explain your philosophy of life, through concrete details: books as faithful companions, art, having time, changed from “to have” to “we do” …
I feel that your clothes, your designs, are also faithful to that philosophy: garments that last, that do not go out of style, that we like and that last in time thanks to their quality.
    Congratulations!

    1. Dear Ana,
Thank you for your kind words and support Ana. Your viewpoint is much appreciated, it encourages us and other clients alike to buy into that what we believe in.
Once we are up and ready to sell in the EU, we’ll announce that in our newsletter.
      Take care,
      xxx
